Updates on the NFA EFO program from Chief Steve Murphy, Hingham MA FD, New England Director of the IAFC’s EFO section:
o After a few year hiatus, the NFA opened the application period for the EFO program on Jan 1, 2024. Within two weeks, they received over 700 applications. The NFA hired members from the EFO section to review and approve the applications. We read 500 and recommended 150. (I was one of ten who went and made the recommendations.)
o They will open the applications again this year on Nov 1 and anticipate the same number of applicants. (Limited to 500 that meet the criteria or thirty days, whichever comes first.)
o Last year, we only had thirty-four people from New England apply, and nine were accepted. (See chart below.)
o I want to help improve the number of accepted candidates and will host a Zoom class for anyone interested in applying.
o I will be at the NE Division conference and can answer any questions. People can also email questions as well.
Steve Murphy is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.

The National Fire Academy’s Executive Fire Officer Leadership Symposium is scheduled for April 25-26, 2025. If you haven’t gone, this is a great educational opportunity.
§ The symposium is open to ALL fire and emergency medical service leaders – Not just EFO students and alums.
§ The speaker list hasn’t been released yet, but some great presentations are scheduled.
§ The program is free to attend.
· Students stay on campus for free.
· (The NFA requires students to purchase a meal ticket, and they do not provide transportation reimbursement.)
§ The IAFC EFO section will again host a Gettysburg staff ride on Apr 24. (Led by Chuck Burkell.)
