Town of Dover, Massachusetts seeks applications for full-time Fire Chief

FULL-TIME FIRE CHIEF OPPORTUNITY:
The Town of Dover, Massachusetts with a population of approximately 6,000 residents is seeking highly
qualified candidates for the position of its first full-time Fire Chief and Emergency Management Director.
Dover is a small community located 15 miles southwest of Boston, MA. The Dover Fire Department
(DFD) covers a response area of 15.4 square miles and operates 8 pieces of fire apparatus and one BLS
Ambulance from one fire station. The organization employs 1 part-time fire inspector (24hrs/wk), 1
part-time executive assistant (30 hrs/wk) and currently 16 on-call firefighter’s, 12 on-call
firefighter/EMT’s and 13 on-call EMT’s. The Department responded to 402 fire calls and 338 EMS calls in
CY 2024. The DFD has a voted budget of $1,354,430 for FY-2026 to support fire and ambulance
operations.
The Fire Chief provides strategic direction, administrative leadership, and operational oversight
for all Fire Department functions. Responsibilities include operations management, personnel
supervision, policy development, and budget oversight. The Fire Chief is appointed by and operates
under the general supervision of the Board of Fire Engineers (BOFE).

Recommended Minimum Qualifications:
Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred) or specialized knowledge in Fire
Science, Fire Protection Engineering, Public Administration, Business Administration or a closely
related discipline; more than ten (10) years of progressive experience as a member of a fire
department providing Fire and Emergency Medical Services with a minimum of five (5) years’
experience at a supervisory or command rank; or any equivalent combination of education, training
and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential
functions of the job.
Special Requirements: Class D Motor Vehicle Driver’s License; MA EMT Certification; MA Fire Chief
Credential; and a Fire Prevention Officer Credential – Level I. As a condition of employment, the
employee is required to maintain their primary residence within a reasonable distance from the fire
station (less than 30 minutes travel time) as approved by the BOFE and must complete a job-related
medical, psychological and/or physical testing/examinations and CORI certification.

Starting salary range is $155,000- $165,000 depending on qualifications.
