The Town of Brewster is seeking qualified applicants to serve as the next Deputy Fire Chief for the Brewster Fire Department. This position provides supervisory, administrative, and technical services assisting the Fire Chief in the overall management of the Town’s Fire Department.
Brewster is a seaside community on Cape Cod Bay about 90 miles from Boston. The Town’s year-round population of approximately 10,000 residents, triples to just over 30,000 in the summer months. The Brewster Fire Department consists of 23 full-time members including a Chief, Deputy Chief, Fire Prevention Officer, 4 Captains, and 16 Firefighter EMT/Paramedics. The Department covers a response area of 25.4 square miles and responded to 3053 calls in 2023 with 78% being EMS calls.
Duties of the Deputy Chief include but are not limited to assisting the Fire Chief in the administration, direction, and coordination of all aspects of department activities including personnel management, training, operations, and command of firefighting and/or emergency medical operations. Serves as a key member of the Incident Command Staff, often in the role of Operations Chief or other assignment. May serve as the Incident Commander in the absence of the Fire Chief. Reviews, evaluates and monitors new apparatus, tools, personal protective gear used to promote firefighter safety and productivity in accordance with National Fire Protection Association Guidelines (NFPA). Responsible for the supervision and implementation of department training; provides training for personnel, performs or delegates training functions including scheduling, lesson planning, and evaluation of trainings; maintains training records.
Bachelor’s degree in Fire Science, Public Administration, or a related field and a minimum of 10 years of career firefighting experience with a minimum of three years as a captain, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Additional requirements include Massachusetts or National EMT certification (Paramedic preferred), Pro Board Firefighter I/II or equivalent, Pro Board Fire Instructor I, Pro Board Fire Officer I, and a valid driver’s license. This is a salaried position covered under the Town’s Personnel Bylaw Agreement, with a starting annual salary range of $130,790 – $151,611, depending on qualifications and experience.
