Town of Berlin Fire & EMS Department is hiring FF/EMT position

The Berlin Fire & EMS Department is accepting qualified candidates for a Firefighter/EMT position (AEMT or Paramedic strongly encouraged to apply) and to establish a hiring list for future openings and per diem staff. Berlin is a vibrant community with approximately 3,400 residents and a great combination of rural appeal with commercial development including the Solomon Pond Mall and Highland Commons shopping district. The Fire & EMS Department is currently an all-hazards department, running a BLS transporting service (starting ALS transport at the AEMT level in 2026) responding to 1000 emergencies responses year. Strong emphasis is put on community action and includes activities with the schools, the public and events that are held throughout the year to interact with our residents and visitors.

Minium Qualifications include:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid Massachusetts Driver’s License
  • Pro Board-Certified Firefighter I/II
  • Nationally Registered Emergency Medical Technician Basic with Mass Licensure (AEMT or Paramedic)
  • Successful completion of a Candidate Physical Ability Test 

Preference will be given for those with military experience and/or an Associates or Bachelor level degree in a related field. Preference will also be given for lateral transfers from fulltime Fire/EMS positions. 

This position is a union position represented by the Berlin Firefighter’s Local 5298, International Association of Firefighters. Work week is an average of 42 hours consisting of (1) 24-hour shift on duty, followed by (2) 24-hour days off, followed by (1) 24-hour shift on duty, followed by (4) 24-hour days off. This scheduled is typically called a 1 on, 2 off, 1 on 4 off rotation. Shifts will include nights, weekends and holidays. Successful candidates must be available to respond to off shift emergencies and work overtime shifts as necessary. Starting pay is $26.08/hr to $28.79/hr ($56,958.72/year to $62,877.36/year) depending on qualifications and experience. * Benefits include paid leave, medical/life/disability insurance, Worcester County Retirement System, uniform allowance and medical retirement benefits.

The Town of Berlin conducts extensive pre-employment background/criminal/motor vehicle records check, an NFPA 1582 pre-employment physical and drug and alcohol testing for all successful applicant candidates.
