LAST ALARM
Captain John D. Whitney
Line of Duty – Occupational Cancer
FCAM Extends sympathies to Captain Whitney’s family and the Greenfield Fire Department
It is with profound sadness that I regret to announce the line-of-duty death of retired Captain John D. Whitney following his courageous battle with occupational cancer.
Captain Whitney was appointed as a full-time firefighter on February 4, 2001, and was promoted to the permanent rank of Captain on September 1, 2011. He retired from active service on May 23, 2026, due to a diagnosis of occupational cancer.
Captain Whitney was a respected officer, mentor, colleague, and friend. His leadership, experience, and dedication left a lasting impact on the Greenfield Fire Department and on the many firefighters who had the privilege of serving alongside him.
On behalf of the entire Greenfield Fire Department, I extend our deepest sympathies to John’s family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched. I ask that you keep the Whitney family and the members of our department in your thoughts during this extraordinarily difficult time.
Funeral arrangements and information regarding Fire Department honors will be announced once they have been finalized.
