Roger D. Wentzell Obituary

Roger D. Wentzell, 87, a lifelong resident of Boylston and a man whose life was defined by service, community, and family, passed away peacefully on February 22, 2026,  at the Jewish Healthcare Center after a period of declining health. He was deeply proud to call Boylston his home. Born in Worcester, he was the son of the late Robert E. and Mildred C. (Runvik) Wentzell. Roger’s life was a testament to dedication—dedication to his family, his professions, his town, and to helping others.

For 63 years, Roger was the proprietor of Model Dairy, a true fixture in Boylston. Generations of families knew him as a steady, friendly presence, delivering not only milk but conversation, laughter, kindness and affectionately -earned him the badge of “Midnight Milkman,” Roger’s commitment to the benefit of others earned him the honor of Citizen of the Year in 1999.

Roger’s devotion to service began at age 18 when he joined the Boylston Volunteer Fire Department. He rose through the ranks to become Chief of the Boylston Fire Department, serving with courage, integrity, and an unwavering sense of responsibility which spanned 48 years within the department.

A lifelong motorcyclist, Roger combined his love of riding with fellowship and service when he founded the Red Knights International Motorcycle Club. What began as a single chapter in Boylston grew into an international organization with chapters spanning the globe, creating lifelong friendships and a shared mission among firefighters who shared his passion for the open road.

With a deep appreciation for history and vintage machinery, Roger founded Straw Hollow Engine Works, an organization dedicated to preserving and sharing the interest in antique farm equipment and stationary engines. What began as a personal passion grew into a well-attended annual show that brings together enthusiasts near and far.

Roger was a 45-year member of the Boylston Masonic Lodge and a charter member of the Boylston Lions Club. Through these service organizations and countless other connections, Roger gave countless hours of volunteering and service to others. Throughout all of his interests, Roger enjoyed meeting new acquaintances – many which soon became friends.

Above all, Roger loved his family. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Janet (Freel) Wentzell; his three children, Jodi M. Schultz and her husband Jeff, Robert J. Wentzell, and Carolyn D. Wentzell and her companion Michael. He also leaves three grandchildren, Jason Schultz, Johann Schultz, and Sean Wentzell; four great-grandchildren, Thor Schultz, Grady Schultz, Courtney McEldowney, and Travis Schultz; his brother, Charles Wentzell and his wife Jeanne; a brother-in-law Charles Gifford, as well as many nieces and nephews. Roger also leaves his lifelong friends, Steve Welus and Peter Coskie. He was predeceased by his beloved granddaughter, Marisa Wentzell, and by his sisters, Sally Feely and Diane Gifford.

Roger’s life was one of quiet strength, tireless service, and enduring commitment for his town, his friends, and most especially his family. His legacy will live on in the community he helped build and the countless lives he touched.
