Chiefs Answering the Call for the Mentoring Program

On September 26, the Fire Chiefs Association of Massachusetts (FCAM) hosted a new mentoring class at the Westborough Fire Headquarters, graciously supported by Chief Purcell and the FCAM Executive and Board of Directors. Their commitment to advancing leadership development within the fire service has been instrumental in the success of this important initiative.

The session brought together nearly 30 Fire Chiefs representing 14 districts across the Commonwealth. Participants engaged in advanced leadership training through our updated Mentoring Program, which has been enhanced with additional layers of leadership development. The program was led by Frank Viscuso, Deputy Chief (Ret.), a nationally recognized speaker and respected authority on fire service leadership. His expertise, combined with the updated program framework, provided Chiefs with valuable insights into cultivating strong leadership and mentoring skills within their departments and beyond.

The feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive, highlighting the program’s value in equipping Chiefs to serve as mentors both within their districts and across the wider fire service community. By investing in mentorship, these leaders are not only shaping the next generation of fire service professionals but also strengthening the culture of leadership, accountability, and support within our profession. We extend our sincere gratitude to all the Chiefs who dedicated their time and energy to participate in this training, despite their demanding schedules. Your willingness to embrace mentorship ensures that the fire service in Massachusetts continues to thrive through shared knowledge, guidance, and leadership.

A Perfect Storm: Cities and Towns Face Historic Fiscal Pressures, developed in collaboration with the Center for State Policy Analysis, covers the larger forces pushing many municipalities near a fiscal breaking point.

Please see the report here – we’d welcome the opportunity to connect with you in the weeks ahead to hear your insights as we develop a set of recommendations to guide our work in the coming months.
