Death of Chief Arthur Soares Ret. of the Somerset Fire Department

FCAM members and the Executive Board extends it’s sympathies to the family of Chief Soares and the Somerset Fire Department. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

Arthur Soares, age 95, of Somerset, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 18, 2025. Born in Somerset, he was the son of the late John and Umbelina (Charves) Soares and beloved husband of the late Helen J. (Silvia) Soares.  Arthur was a proud man who received his Associate’s Degree in Fire Science from BCC in 1978 and went on to serve as a Somerset Fire Fighter for 33 years, and 4 more years as Chief. His greatest love in life was his wife Helen who he loved traveling the country with and spending their winters together in Florida. In his younger days, he enjoyed being part of his bowling league always trying to reach his goal of a perfect 300 and fishing with his son in Westport. 

He is survived by his children:  Thomas A. Soares and his wife Diane (Potvin) Soares, Paula G. Soares and her husband Tom Franek, sister: Olive Oliveira, grandchildren: Rebecca, Corylyn, and Rachel, great grandchildren: Camden, Auron, Cailyn and Finn and many nieces and nephews especially Antone Soares who he had a close relationship with. He was also the brother of the late Evelyn Duff, Manuel, William, John, Antone and Joseph Soares.

Calling hours for Arthur will take place on Thursday, January 23, from 4-7 PM at the Hathaway Community Home for Funerals, the address is, 900 Buffinton St., in Somerset. His funeral will take place on Friday, January 24, 2025, 9AM from the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Peace Parish at St. Patrick’s Church, the address is, 306 South St. in Somerset, MA at 10 AM. Burial to follow at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Somerset. In lieu of flowers, donations will be accepted by the Somerset Fire Department 475 County Street, Somerset, MA 02726 to purchase a tool in Arthur’s name.
