Chelmsford’s Building Commissioner has requested that the town establish a “Board of Survey” to address unsafe or hazardous structures. In accordance with Massachusetts General Law Chapter 143, Section 8, this Board is responsible for:
Inspecting buildings that are in disrepair or present a public safety hazard;
Supporting any necessary action by the municipality in coordination with the Building Inspector and the Fire Chief.
State law requires that the Board consist of the Fire Chief, a surveyor, and one disinterested party appointed by the local inspector.
I’m reaching out to ask if your community has such a board in place, and if so, what resources and responsibilities are typically expected of the Fire Chief as a member.
